Promoter Edwin Eselem Continues to Use Sport As a Tool to Preach Peace and Social Cohesion in Wotutu

Top Teams Compete to Win Cash Prize of FCFA 1 Million – 

WOTUTU, June 23, 2023 – The promoter of the Wotutu-Ewongo Interquarter Football Competition, Edwin Eselem, today announced that the 2023 edition of the football jamboree will kick-off on Sunday July 9, 2023, at the Catholic School football field in Wotutu-Ewongo. The announcement was made following a meeting of the tournament’s organising committee which took place in Wotutu village. 

This year’s edition will bring together the top teams of the Wotutu-Ewongo community in the Bonjongo court area as they compete for a total cash prize of FCFA 1 million CFA. The competition will span over six weeks with the crowning of a third champion on Sunday August 27, 2023. 

This year’s tournament has been placed under theme of peace and social cohesion. The tournament’s promoter and organisers continue to use the convening and transformative power of sport to occupy the youth during the holiday period and to uplift the community. 

“We are thrilled to announce another edition of the highly anticipated Wotutu football tournament”, said promoter Edwin Eselem. “We have seen the momentum and popular support that this tournament has been having within our community and beyond. It is our hope that this third edition continues to build on that phenomenal success.”

The first edition of the Wotutu-Ewongo Interquarter football competition was to bring hope to the community at the heart of the socio-political crisis which affected Wotutu village. More than 80% of the community including women and children fled the community between 2016 and 2020. The tournament was an opportunity to rally the youth and bring a new lease of life in the village. Over the last two editions, the competition has benefitted from massive popular support not only from the community but from friends, community development actors, sympathisers and lovers of the beautiful game. 

■ About the Wotutu-Ewongo Football Competition 

The Wotutu-Ewongo Football is an annual football competition bringing together the top football teams of the Wotutu-Ewongo villages in the Bonjongo court area during the holiday season. The tournament was created out of the need to occupy the youth during their vacation but most importantly preach peace and social cohesion after the community was badly affected by the Anglophone crisis. Now in its third edition, the tournament uses the convening power of sports to change lives and uplift the community.
